Desert Barberry (Algerita)
I do strongly feel this is up there as one of the most important desert plant medicines. Its pharmacological properties are the same as oregon grape root and some people know this plant as Algerita and the Mohonia species.
The main compound in this plant that is the medicine is the berberine. It's very yellow and the the plant I wild harvested was very bright yellow which comes out in the tincture. The more yellow the stronger the medicine.
It's a bitter tonic meaning it strengthens the intestines, helps to wake up the gut and move things through it. It helps to deliver bile into the system which is a natural laxative. Take the tincture in the evening and by morning you'll have an evacuation.
Its a great skin wash! Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. The berberine is very anti-fungal and I've painted the tincture right on to a fungal skin rash on my back and it dried it up.
It helps lower the heat in the body and may help lower blood pressure. Helps to regulate blood sugar levels.
Anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory. Cleans and purifies the liver and blood.
Bitters help re-set the para-sympathetic nervous system. It helps put the nervous system back in balance. Helps with stress when heart is beating too fast.
Bitters helps with poor protein and fat digestion. Stimulates hydrochloric acid. Good for sluggish GI. Take 20 minutes prior to eating. Don't wash it down with water even though bitters are hard to take. Some people have to do bitters every time they sit down to a meal.
Barberry helps inhibit the overgrowth of candida.
Good for urinary tract microbial infections.
This is a liver tonic, which also helps with hangovers or working with solvents.
