The Health Benefits of Raw Kefir.

This morning I was switching out my grains of my cow and goat kefir with my new roommates and they started asking me a bunch of questions and I thought maybe I should write a blog about this 😉

Question 1- What is kefir?

Its a raw probiotic drink, a cultured milk, a fermented milk that is pre digested and superior to yogurt.  Probiotics are the friendly bacteria we need to keep our immune system and gut healthy.

Question 2-  Where do your grains come from?

My answer was somewhere in Russia but nobody really knows and it’s a big mystery.

Kefir grains aren’t really “grains” but colonies formed from bacteria and yeast.

Wiki Pedia’s answer is “Kefir is a fermented milk drink made with kefir grains and is believed to have its origins in Russia.  It is prepared by inoculating cow, goat, or sheep milk with kefir grains. Traditional kefir was made in skin bags that were hung near a doorway; the bag would be knocked by anyone passing through the doorway to help keep the milk and kefir grains well mixed.”

Question 3-  How long to you keep your grains in the milk?

I keep my grains in the milk for 3-4 days.  I like strong thick kefir.  I keep it on the counter and I keep a loose lid on it, so some air gets in.   It will culture faster in warmer temperatures.

Then I take the kefir and strain it with a plastic strainer and bamboo spoon as kefir does not like metal.   Next store in a glass mason jar and in the fridge.

Question 4- Why are you adding strawberries?

I use the strawberries and add a little raw honey to make it taste good.  It’s just like a tangy strawberry yogurt! YUM!

Question 5- What are the health benefits of kefir?

I love that Kefir means “Feel Good” in Turkish.
