Tallow soap made from animal fat is the original & old-fashioned soap of our ancestors and great grandparents. They were wise and used fat as a skin-cleansing aid.

Questions About Lye In Soap:
Once the soap is set there is a chemical transformation that takes place and there is no lye left in the soap, even though I start with a tiny amount. The amount of animal fat I add in the mixture neutralizes the lye and I ensure there is no lye leftover after the saponification takes place. There is a chemical reaction called saponification that happens between lye and the fat molecule called a triglyceride where the chemical is transformed during the creation of soap. During saponification neither of the original ingredients occur anymore. The lye in sodium hydroxide for my bar soap is eaten in the reaction. There is no lye left after the soap sits for 4 weeks to set.
This is by far the best soap I've used for gentle nourishing cleansing!
